Shoes for the healthy growth of children’s feet

Children’s smiles and healthy growth are the greatest pleasure for moms and dads. We at Miki House feel the same way, which is why we put all our knowledge and love into every pair of shoes to promote this healthy growth.

In our today’s article, we will tell you in detail about the selection of children’s first step shoes.

When young children can only get up for a short time, we recommend using functional shoes that will help them learn to walk comfortably. Such shoes gently embrace the delicate foot without rubbing or squeezing it. The sole of the shoes is very light, giving the child a feeling of being barefoot. The functional first shoe is therefore ideal for standing and first steps indoors.

Children’s feet are sensitive

Children’s feet are mainly made up of cartilage. As the child grows, the cartilage tissue turns into hard bones. During this period of growth, cartilage easily changes shape. Wearing ill-fitting shoes disrupts the healthy growth of the bone and can cause anatomical deformities (not just the feet). Therefore, it is important to choose the most appropriate footwear to promote healthy foot growth. In the picture, you can see that the bones at the age of 1 year 8 months are not connected yet.

Peculiarities of a child’s walk

A child’s walk is different from that of an adult. When walking, adults land on their heels and then move onto their toes. Children land on the entire surface of the foot and shuffle their toes, keeping their knees bent, which is why they can easily trip or fall. We recommend shoes with the right degree of curvature of the toe to minimize falling. In the picture, you can see the difference in the walk of a child (above) and an adult (below).

Sweating of the feet

Children’s feet sweat a lot. Although children’s feet are very small, they have the same number of sweat glands as adults. This means that children can easily sweat due to the high density of the sweat glands. Sweat not only causes an unpleasant odor but is also harmful to health. For this, we recommend absorbent socks and breathable shoes for the child. In the picture below, you can see the ratio of the number of sweat glands on the foot in adults and children.

When children begin to walk, they become active, but their feet are still unstable and need support. During this period, it is very important to choose shoes for the correct formation of the arch of the foot and comfort.

Built for mobility

When walking, children’s toes spread out because their bones are soft and underdeveloped. Miki House shoes are designed to give your toes plenty of space, making this natural position easier. This feature will help your child take steady steps comfortably.

Good heel support

A child’s heels cannot maintain a stable position often they fall inward, the consequence of which can be the so-called valgus foot. The extended heel in Miki House shoes securely fixes the heel and prevents distortion. This feature creates unites the foot and shoe and promotes stable walking.

Raised toe

Toddlers can easily trip and fall because their toes don’t lift up while walking like adults’ do. Which is why Miki House shoes have a slightly raised toe to avoid tripping as much as possible.

Flexible sole

Hard-soled shoes can interfere with proper walking, putting extra pressure on the muscles. Miki House shoes have a flexible sole for a good arch formation.

Easy to put on

The upper part of the Miki House shoes has a wide opening, making them quick and easy to put on. The shoes softly wrap the foot, and a large velcro fastener securely fixes the foot.

When children begin to walk well, they become more and more active. They start actively running and jumping. At this stage, they need shoes that are not only comfortable, promote proper walking and support, but also protect their feet from injury.

Special materials

The carefully selected material used for Miki House shoes:

  • External material: A soft pad is attached to the opening of the shoe for comfort.
  • Inner material: Pile fabric is used to absorbs moisture well and does not irritate the skin.
  • Insole: Under the pile fabric is a rubber sponge that softens the impact of the foot on the ground.
  • Sole: Has soft, durable and non-slip rubber for safe movement.

Design and tailoring

To maximize the use of the advantages of materials (softness of the outer material, comfort of the inner material, flexible sole), various techniques are used in the design and tailoring:

  • Larger details create a more seamless design that protects the baby’s skin.
  • A special stitch is used to minimize the gap between the opening of the shoe and the heel.
  • These shoes provide comfort by ensuring maximum flexibility.
  • The shape-retaining 3D construction keeps the shoe firm.

Handmade product

The most important factor in determining the quality and characteristics of a shoe is the process by which the sole is bonded. For Miki House, this process is carried out by craftsmen who individually complete each pair by hand.

This special vulcanization process binds the sole and upper tightly and keeps their shape better. The result is a thin rubber outsole that provides flexibility and comfortable walking.

Children’s feet grow rapidly (1 cm per year for up to 2 years), feet continue growing until about 13-15 years old, and the bone structure of the foot by this age approaches the size of an adult. Meaning, if the size fits at first, the shoe might feel tight after a while. Be sure to measure your child’s foot size at least once every 3 months to choose the size that best fits your child’s foot.

It is not recommended to oversize or to continue using shoes that are too small. Poorly fitting shoes break and negatively affect the growth of the foot. Therefore, it is very important to choose the right size for the child.

Self-checking shoe size

To measure the foot correctly, you need to be in a standing position with a fixed heel. Measuring in a sitting position is inaccurate because the child’s feet are not put under pressure. Here are some tips to for self-measurements:

  • Be sure to wear both shoes during the fitting.
  • Check if there is enough space in the toe area.
  • Make sure the heel does not move when the buckle is tightened.
  • Make sure the shoes fits the width and height of the foot.
  • Make sure the shoes are not too tight and don’t touch the ankle.
